WHAT IS THE TOURISM TAX?

A transient guest tax is a tax on hotel rooms and overnight accommodations paid mostly by people visiting Excelsior Springs.

It is not a sales tax paid by residents unless you stay in a hotel, bed-and-breakfast or overnight rental within the city limits.

WHY IT MATTERS

Tourism is economic development, and Excelsior Springs was founded on tourism. a YES vote helps turn visitor activity into reinvestment in the community residents and guests enjoy.

TOURISM TAX DOLLARS CAN HELP:

  • Develop and resurrent our mineral waters
  • Support festivals and events for residents and visitors
  • Develop art initiatives, art festivals and public artwork
  • Expand the trolley transportation system for residents and visitors
  • Market Excelsior Springs to visitors, conferences and group travel
  • Bring more people to town to support small and large businesses
  • Enhance wayfinding signage, beautification efforts and amenities
  • Provide hospitality training and skill building for local businesses

HOW WOULD THE FUND BE MANAGED?

  • Managed by an advisory board of residents and business owners
  • Overseen by the advisory board, city staff, and city council
  • Funds will be audited just like other city funds or accounts
  • Annual budget prepared and approved by the tourism advisory board and city council

WHAT THE TOURISM TAX IS NOT

  • Tourism tax dollars cannot be used for anything other than promoting tourism
  • Tourism tax dollars cannot go into the general fund or used purposes other than tourism
  • Tourism tax dollars cannot be spent without tourism advisory board approval and city council approval
